Guernsey's flora and fauna is rich and diverse..let me guide you towards the usual...and perhaps not so usual..
Guernsey lies 45km from France and 100km from the UK. Guernsey also has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world.
Guernsey has an area of approximately 63km square and has around 30 classes of vegetation. Across the whole of the Channel Islands 1,800 vascular plants can be found with again around one third of vascular plants non-native to Guernsey.
Our island has a lot of coast ! The coastal area is particularly rich and there are many less obvious plants to be found there.
Equally, Guernsey boasts an estimated 826 km of hedgerows - a result of inherent laws over the centuries splitting fields and meadows. These hedgerows are cut twice a year ... this is rigorously enforced.
We here on the island are fortunate to enough to be able to enjoy a wide range of wild flora..including exotic orchids, pink pimpernels and rare lilies.
Trees native to Guernsey include the widespread ash, oak and sycamore..and also to a lesser extent holly, Common alder, Sweet chestnut, lime and Monterey pine.
Culture and history info
Guernsey or The Bailiwick of Guernsey...the inclusion of the smaller islands of Alderney, Sark, Herm and Lihou constitute the so called Bailiwick.
Guernsey has many similarities to the mainland (UK) but maintains a French identity with many locations and and street names retaining their Norman French names.
Our language, known as patois or more accurately, Guernesiais, is hardly heard nowadays though there are a number of initiatives running to try to keep the language alive.
It is also important to understand that Guernsey...and indeed the Bailiwick of Guernsey...see above..is a self-governing British Crown dependency with its own government..known as the States of Guernsey. The island has it's own parliament and it's own laws.
In terms of of visible history...the island retains evidence of it attempts to protect itself during medieval times, the Civil War, the pre-Napoleonic and Napoleonic era and of course the German Occupation of 1940-45.
Also visible and worth a visit are the many Megalithic sites scattered all over the island.
